Spine Treatment & Surgery

Back pain is the most common symptom of a spinal disorder. Spinal disorders can be caused by trauma or a result of wear and tear over an extended period of time.

In most cases back and neck pain can be treated by doctors or therapist using non-surgical treatment methods. Spine surgery is a last resort. Surgery of the spine is usually reserved for structural abnormalities that have not responded to conservative, non-surgical treatment methods such as physical therapy, medicines, and injections.

Spinal Disorders

Signs of a spinal disorder can include, pain, muscle spasms, muscle tightness, tingling in the legs or arms, and difficulty with movement. Aging, overuse, genetics and injury are all potential causes of a spinal disorder. Examples of spinal disorders include:

  • Arthritis
  • Chronic Back Pain
  • Degenerative Scoliosis
  • Disc Herniation
  • Degenerative Disc Disease
  • Fractures
  • Kyphosis
  • Myelopathy
  • Osteoporosis
  • Radiculopathy
  • Sacroiliac Joint Dysfunction
  • Sciatica
  • Spondylolisthesis
  • Spondylosis
  • Spinal Stenosis
  • Whiplash

Non-Surgical Spine Treatment

Most patients experiencing back or neck pain will not require surgery to manage their symptoms. Surgery is a last resort, and is only considered after conservative treatment methods have failed to reduce or alleviate pain.

The overwhelming majority of our back and neck patients benefit from a non-invasive or minimally invasive treatment.

After a comprehensive assessment and diagnosis of a spine disorder, our highly trained orthopedic spine specialist will educate and present a patient with individualized treatment options to improve their pain, mobility and function.

  • Improve Posture
  • Massage Therapy
  • Medications
  • Physical Therapy
  • PRP Therapy
  • Rehabilitation
  • Rest
  • Weight Loss

Additional Non-Surgical Spine Treatments

Epidural Steroid Injection (ESI) – An epidural steroid (cortisone) injection is a minimally invasive procedure that can help relieve pain in the back, neck, arm or leg caused by inflamed spinal nerves.

Facet Joint Injection – medication is injected directly into a facet joint, which links the spinal bones together, with the help of X-ray guidance. Also known as a Facet Block.

Radiofrequency Ablation (RFA) – Also known as a Radiofrequency Neurotomy, an RFA may be used to treat pain in patients who are suffering from joint degeneration or chronic neck and lower back pain. Electromagnetic waves are delivered to certain nerves to interrupt pain signals being sent to the brain. Typically used to target pain coming from the Facet or Sacroiliac Joint.

Sacroiliac Joint Injection – injection used to diagnose and provide pain relief to patients suffering from sacroiliac joint dysfunction, a common cause of lower back and leg pain. Also referred to as a Sacroiliac Joint Block. Once adequate pain relief if achieve, a patient can return to or start a rehabilitation or physical therapy program.

Spine Surgery vs. Conservative Spine Treatment

The overwhelming majority of patients who have a spinal disorder do not need surgery. In most cases spine surgery is the final option, after conservative back and neck pain treatments are exhausted or if the patient if in pain as the result of trauma or a severe injury.

Most patients benefit from a combination of non-surgical treatments, such as physical therapy, chiropractic care, bracing, orthotics, medication, exercise, acupuncture, weight loss, rest and injections (facet, epidural, trigger point or nerve block).

Spine Surgery

Patients requiring spine surgery can find comprehensive and advanced care at Brooklyn Premier Orthopedics. Our orthopedic spine surgeons offer minimally invasive surgical treatments as well as traditional surgeries to address spinal disorders and issues.

Our spine surgeons use the most advanced technologies and techniques. Robotics, imaging systems and other technologies are used by a surgeon to specifically address a spine disorder without affecting unrelated parts of the spine or healthy tissue. The use of advanced technologies during spine surgery lead to faster patient recovery and a reduced risk of complications.

Minimally Invasive Spine Surgery

Depending on the type of spine surgery, minimally invasive techniques might be used to treat a specific spine disorder or in conjunction with another surgical procedure. The smaller incisions made during minimally invasive surgery cause less trauma, blood loss, risk for infection, tissue and muscle damage, blood loss and scarring than a traditional surgery. Minimally invasive spine surgery allows a patient and quicker and experience less post-operative back and neck pain than they would from traditional surgery.

Minimally invasive surgical techniques can be used to treat spinal cord compression, disc replacements, removal of benign and malignant spine tumors and spine fractures. The spine surgeons at Brooklyn Premier Orthopedics are highly trained and experienced in minimally invasive techniques and provide different types of minimally invasive spine surgery including:

  • Corpectomy
  • Discectomy
  • Foraminotomy
  • Kyphoplasty
  • Laminectomy
  • Laminotomy
  • Spinal Fusion

It’s important to note that not all back and neck disorders can be effectively treated using minimally invasive spine surgery techniques.

A proper diagnosis is extremely important to make sure that a patient is being provided with the best possible treatment.

There are situations where a minimally invasive technique might be used in conjunction with an open surgery.

In some cases a patient might require a complex open surgery to address a severe spinal disorder. Patients who have a major spine curvature, spinal tumors or who have suffered severe spine trauma might need a complex surgery to address their issue. Complex surgery take a longer period of time to complete than less complicated procedures.
